Professor Dr. Rajah Rasiah has been named the 2017 Distinguished Professor in an event on 12 February 2018 at Marriot Hotel, Putrajaya. The award delivered by the Higher Education Minister, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh would be the fifth of such conferment.

The Distinguished Professor Award (or Anugerah Profesor Ulung) is an initiative introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education to acknowledge the exemplary professors serving in public universities with outstanding achievement that could sparks the local academic world further on global stage.

Had been received his bachelor’s degree in management and master’s degree in development studies (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Professor Rajah Rasiah then pursued his PhD in Economics at the University of Cambridge (1989 -1992).

Since beginning serving in the University of Malaya as a professor in the Asia-Europe Institute, and later in the Faculty of Economy and Administration (FEA), he has held several prominent positions including the Khazanah Nasional Chair of Regulatory Studies at UM Malaysian Centre of Regulatory Studies, UMCoRS (2010 -2013) and Dean of the FEA (2009 - 2010, 2013-2014).

Throughout his year as an academician he has received 30 awards and recognition. Among them are the Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung Senior Award (1996), Marquis Who’s Who (2007), Rajawali Fellowship at the John Ash Center, Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University (2014), and Celso Furtado prize by the World Academy of Sciences (2014).

Professor Dr. Rajah Rasiah’s conferment of the Distinguished Professor Award marks the third time that UM academicians are named as Distinguished Professor after Datuk Professor Dr. Looi Lai Meng (2010) and Datuk Professor Dr. Harith Ahmad (2014).
