Building Surveying is a rapidly growing profession in Malaysia and its services are highly needed in all economics and development situations. Its scope begins from the very early stage of planning a development project to construction management, maintenance and up to the conservation of historical and architecturally important buildings. To address the shortage of professional Building Surveyors in the country, the Building Surveying Programme at undergraduate level was introduced in the Universiti Malaya (UM) in 1996. This programme aims to produce ethical and professional Building Surveyors and Property Managers who are able to function effectively as members of the construction and property industry and able to face technological and managerial challenges in the national and international context. The programme receives accreditations from both local and international professional bodies i.e. Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), UK. The minimum period of study for the Bachelor of Building Surveying is 3½ years. The successful completion of the programme confers upon the candidate Bachelor’s Degree in Building Surveying.
The main roles and responsibilities of a Building Surveyor in Malaysia, as prescribed by the RISM cover the following areas:
The career as a professional Building Surveyor includes every aspect of a building life cycle from its planning stage to restoration, demolition and redevelopment. A competent Building Surveyor will be able to manage, organise, monitor, assess, and coordinate construction works while acting as the main link to other professional services in the construction industry.
A qualified Building Surveyor can work in the government / semi-government department such as local authority, higher learning institution (public and private), and also private sector like developer, financial and banking institution, consultant firm, insurance company, as well as research organisation.

The Bachelor of Building Surveying is a full-time programme with a total credit requirement of 125 credits, within a minimum period of 7 normal semesters + 1 special semester and a maximum of 11 semesters.
Out of the 125 credits, 12 credits comprise University Courses, 99 credits cover Programme Core Courses, 8 credits contain University Elective Courses, and 6 credits of Programme Elective Courses. Industrial Training is compulsory at the end of the course.
The students of this programme will learn construction technology and structural principles, building services, built environment laws, building pathology, building inspection and survey, property management and maintenance, as well as facilities and project management.
