The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning is a professionally accredited programme established in accordance with the requirements and standards set by the Board of Town Planners Malaysia. The programme is developed to prepare future planners who are capable of responding to the increasingly complex challenges of urbanisation, environmental sustainability, socio-economic transformation, and regional development within Malaysia and beyond.
Distinct from similar programmes offered by other institutions, the programme at Universiti Malaya is uniquely positioned through its strong emphasis on spatial planning for sustainable development. The curriculum integrates planning theory, governance, urban design, transportation planning, environmental management, urban management, and technological innovation to provide students with a holistic understanding of contemporary planning practice.
The programme is designed to nurture planners who are not only technically competent, but also socially responsive, ethically grounded, and globally aware. Through a balance of academic learning, studio-based training, fieldwork exposure, research activities, and engagement with industry and government agencies, students are equipped with the practical and analytical skills necessary to address real-world urban and regional issues.
Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between people, place, infrastructure, mobility, environment, and governance in shaping resilient and inclusive cities.
Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, one of Southeast Asia’s rapidly evolving metropolitan regions, the programme benefits from its strategic setting within a dynamic urban environment. The city serves as a “living laboratory” where students and researchers are able to observe, analyse, and engage directly with pressing urban challenges such as rapid urban growth, housing affordability, transportation systems, climate resilience, heritage conservation, social equity, and sustainable community development. This provides invaluable opportunities for comparative learning, applied research, and international collaboration.
The Department aspires to be a leading centre of excellence in urban and regional planning education and research within the Asia-Pacific region. Guided by a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and societal impact, the Department continuously strengthens its curriculum, research culture, professional networks, and global partnerships to remain relevant in an increasingly urbanised world. The programme also places importance on interdisciplinary collaboration and international perspectives, preparing graduates to contribute effectively in both local and global planning environments.
Graduates of the programme are expected to emerge as future planning professionals, policymakers, researchers, and leaders who are capable of shaping sustainable, inclusive, resilient, and liveable communities.
